Summer and Fall Are Sharing the Caney Fork

Goldenrod is lighting up the banks of the Caney Fork right now, with bright yellow blooms tucked along the water’s edge. Here and there, shrubs are beginning to deepen into shades of red and purple. Most of the trees are still holding onto their summer green, and that’s part of what makes these first hints of autumn so beautiful. You notice every splash of color.

Early fall on the Caney Fork doesn’t arrive all at once. It seems to ease its way in, with a little more color appearing along the banks as the season unfolds. You round a bend and there it is: a patch of yellow, a branch beginning to turn, sunlight catching the water just right. There’s always something new to notice.

If you haven’t been on the Caney Fork lately, come see it now, while summer and fall are still sharing the river.

Bring someone along

A river day gives us something that can be surprisingly hard to find: time with people we enjoy. Once the canoe is in the water, you can settle into paddling, talking, and looking around. Sometimes the conversation gets lively; sometimes something along the bank catches everyone’s attention. And sooner or later, somebody usually has an opinion about who’s been doing most of the paddling.

Bring the friend you keep saying you need to get together with, or make an afternoon of it with your partner. Talk as you paddle, take a few pictures, and enjoy having something to do together that doesn’t need to be a special occasion. Some of the days we remember best begin simply because someone says, “Let’s go.”

If you homeschool, turn a trip down the Caney into your own field trip. The river gives you plenty to talk about, from changing plants and wildlife to moving water, geology, weather, and the history of the area. You might choose one question to explore together, such as how the water moves around a bend or where the first leaves are changing. Learning feels a little different when the classroom is floating.

Our scenic canoe trip information explains the outing and the included paddles and life jackets. Take a look at the details and check the available options for the date you have in mind.

A few things to make the day easy

A little preparation helps you settle in and enjoy your river day. Bring a light layer you can take off and keep dry, along with a towel for afterward. A warm afternoon can still include a cooler morning or a shady stretch of river, so having that extra layer gives you options.

Even on a warm day, the Caney’s water stays cool. Keep your life jacket on while you’re paddling, and ask our crew about the day’s conditions before you head out.

You don’t have to arrive knowing exactly how everything works. Our crew will help fit your life jacket, load your supplies into the canoe or kayak, and get you ready for your trip. If it’s your first time, ask questions. We want you to leave the launch feeling comfortable and ready to enjoy the day.

Forgot the sunscreen? Need water shoes? We sell water, water shoes, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and snacks at Canoe the Caney, and lockers are available to rent for the things you’d rather not take on the river.

On weekends, you can make lunch part of the outing, too. Our food truck serves made-to-order smoothies and hot cheesesteak hoagies, giving you a chance to enjoy something to eat before heading home.

Enjoy this part of fall, too

You don’t have to wait for peak fall color to enjoy autumn on the Caney. There’s something special about being here at the beginning, when the season is just starting to reveal itself. The goldenrod, the first red and purple leaves, and the green trees reflected in the water are all part of fall as it looks right now.

If you’ve been meaning to make time for a river day, come spend an afternoon with us. Explore Canoe the Caney’s trips to plan your outing, and see what’s waiting around the next bend.
