Bettys Island Caney Fork River Float

The Betty’s Island Train Bridge Excursion is without a doubt our most popular canoe / kayak trip we offer at Canoe the Caney. From bald eagles nesting on the old 1800’s train bridge, to rainbow and brown trout swimming in the crystal clear water and the playful river otters who call the Caney Fork home, you will want to spend the entire day soaking up all the wonders this river has to offer.

Key Takeaways

  • This float trip runs every single day leaving hourly from 9am to 1pm. You will want to arrive 20-30 minutes early, especially on Sat/Sun. Canoes, Single Kayaks, and Tandem Kayaks are all available and recommended for this trip.
  • Weekdays are a great option to have the river to yourself so if you have a weekday free, book it and enjoy the solitude nature offers for a day.
  • This is a great way to spend the day in nature with the paddle taking around 3-5 hours on average (depending on water flow).
  • Give yourself plenty of time. Depending on water flow from Center Hill Dam, it can take some people up to 4 hours of leisurely paddling to reach Bettys Island. If you want to stop along the way, try reserving the 9:00, 10:00, or 11:00 trip. Keep in mind, these hours book up the fastest so plan ahead if possible.
  • Best scenery on the river and the only way to paddle below the old train bridge.
  • This stretch of the river offers the best opportunity to see bald eagles and river otters.
  • The Caney Fork is a premiere Trout Fishing destination. Be sure to have your fishing license and trout stamps.
  • The river typically has a gentle leisurely current making the paddling experience very light and relaxing.

Bettys Island Float

In addition to the towering rock bluffs and pristine green farmland that make up the Caney Fork river bank, the Betty’s Island Train Bridge excursion offers many unique sights making it the most popular trip we offer. One of the many highlights and probably the most popular points of interest on the Caney Fork is the old 1800’s train bridge that was used during the filming of The Green Mile with Tom Hanks. This river excursion is the only way to paddle underneath the old train bridge which is sometimes still used.

Take time to search out a nest of bald eagles and watch the world zip by as you float lazily underneath several interstate bridges. Keep an eye on the water too. You might just see the reflection of rainbow trout or playful river otters swimming around your canoe / kayak. Have you ever played tag with a Blue Heron? Chances are you will on this trip!

What to Expect with Bettys Island

The Bettys Island Scenic Excursion is one of our longest trip option averaging 3-5 hours. This section of the river is still a Class 1 river so you will be able to enjoy your 3-5 hour float. There is usually a leisure current on this section of the river making the paddling experience very light and relaxing.

Make sure to have some sunscreen, a hat for shade, some snacks for energy, and at least one bottle of water per paddler. Most people will not get wet on this trip but comfy clothes are recommended. While swimming is an option, the water is 55 degrees year round! When the water is low, there are plenty of picnic areas. However, if the water is higher there may not be very many places to stop. Don’t forget, the shoreline is all private land so please clean up after yourself. Thank you!

If you are looking for a shorter paddle and time on the water, check out our 6-mile float HERE.
